The General Irrigation Organization is a public government entity established by Council of Ministers Resolution No. (542) dated 26-08-1438H, replacing the Al-Ahsa Irrigation and Drainage Authority established in 1392H to manage irrigation and drainage operations in Al-Ahsa. The organization’s structure was approved by Resolution No. (187) dated 15/4/1439H. It has legal personality, financial and administrative independence, and is linked to the Minister of Environment, Water and Agriculture. Its headquarters is in Al-Ahsa, with branches across the Kingdom as needed.
The organization uses multiple water sources such as treated wastewater, agricultural drainage water, groundwater, and dam water.
Resolution No. (702) dated 26/11/1442H assigned it responsibilities for treated water distribution, sales, and utilization.
Resolution No. (794) dated 17/11/1444H transferred dam-related responsibilities to the organization.
Developing policies and plans for irrigation and agricultural drainage.
Managing irrigation and drainage projects including pumping stations and water networks.
Building infrastructure to maximize non-conventional water use.
Providing irrigation water through scheduling programs.
